Gender Creativity and Autism Workshop

June 15, 2017, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

This workshop will share current findings and perspectives on gender diversity for individuals on the autism spectrum and will present evidence-informed practices for supporting gender creative children and transgender youth who are also on the autism spectrum.

Researchers have identified the co-occurrence of gender diversity and autism as an important emerging issue in terms of clinical practice. Parents, clinicians, and educators, and support professionals in the fields of autism and gender are increasingly likely to encounter clients, patients, and families working to understand gender diversity and autism simultaneously.

Workshop Speakers:

Ashleigh Yule is a registered psychologist specializing in child and adolescent mental health with a focus in both the autism spectrum and transgender health. She provides counselling, assessment, and consultation services for children, adolescents, and their families. She also provides professional development and teacher education around child and adolescent mental health, particularly in the areas of autism and LGBTQ+ health. Ashleigh is currently completing her PhD in School and Applied Child Psychology at the University of Calgary. She is a member of the Autism Spectrum Education, Research, and Training (ASERT) lab, and her doctoral dissertation research focuses on examining the overlap of gender diversity and autism from the perspective of individuals with lived experience on both the gender and the autism spectrums.
