SUMMARY:The Joy of Cooking: Cooking Skills for Independent Living
DESCRIPTION:Whether independent living is one of your short term goals and you’re planning to move out soon\, or it’s a long-term goal for some time in the future – you can begin preparing for it now–starting in the kitchen! \n\n\n\nThis hands-on session is a great way to help you increase your confidence in the kitchen. \n\n\n\nWhile preparing a tasty and well-balanced dinner\, participants will also learn about: \n\n\n\n\nthe importance of good hygiene\n\n\n\ncleanliness in the kitchen and the importance of preventing cross-contamination\n\n\n\nthe proper use of utensils\n\n\n\nhow to properly measure and prepare food\, and\n\n\n\nworking with others.\n\n\n\n\nAnd then\, you’ll get to enjoy what you’ve made for dinner!  \n\n\n\nThe menu for this session is Chicken Caesar Salad Wraps with Homemade Potato Chips! (Yum!) \n\n\n\nPlease note: This activity is in-person only at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW) and limited to six participants. There will only be light support provided by staff\, so participants need to be able to follow instructions and be willing to work in a small group to prepare the meal. SUMMARY:Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Tips & Strategies for interpreting non-verbal cues
DESCRIPTION:If interpreting non-verbal social cues and body language is challenging for you\, we can help! In this fun and engaging workshop participants will use “Body Language Decoder Cards” to help learn\, understand and interpret basic body language and social cues.  \n\n\n\nFor context\, it’s thought that up to 90% of communication is non-verbal in nature. Body language\, facial expressions and unwritten social rules can be difficult to interpret for many Autistic and neurodivergent people\, leaving them feeling disconnected in social settings.  \n\n\n\nYou’re invited to start building a foundation for better communication here.  \n\n\n\nThursday\, May 224:00 – 5:00 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW) *As this workshop is interactive and involves practicing the strategies learned\, we are limiting participation to in-person only at this time.  \n\n\n\nThere is no cost to attend and advance registration is not required. It’s your time to use your way. \n\n\n\nOn May 29\, in addition to the regular Your Time\, Your Way options\, we’re offering optional themed activities for those who want to connect with others and celebrate National Strawberry Month with us! \n\n\n\nDrop-in hours are anytime between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. Strawberry Fest activities will be set up in the Green Room Between 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm: \n\n\n\n🍓 Decoration Stations (strawberries and cookies)  \n\n\n\n🍓 Strawberry Trivia/Bingo \n\n\n\n🍓 Strawberry Scavenger Hunt (indoor) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you do not wish to participate in Strawberry Fest\, you are still welcome to use the rest of the spaces for your own enjoyment.
