SUMMARY:Phrased & Confused: All about idioms and confusing phrases
DESCRIPTION:Idioms–or confusing phrases–are commonly used expressions that have a non-literal meaning\, which can often only be understood by using contextual information. \n\n\n\nPeople use idioms all the time in everyday conversation\, but the literal meaning of the words is almost never the intended meaning. For Autistic individuals who find good communication challenging at the best of times\, these phrases can leave you feeling very confused. \n\n\n\nThe good news is we can help! In this fun and engaging workshop\, participants will learn how to identify and understand some common idiomatic expressions\, giving them tools to be better able to predict the meanings of these confusing phrases. \n\n\n\nEven if it’s raining cats and dogs\, plan to attend. It will be a piece of cake and you’ll laugh your head off! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, June 54:00 – 5:00 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Avenue NW) \n\n\n\nThere is no cost for this workshop and advance registration is not required. We encourage you to bring a friend and just show up. If you have any questions\, please contact us at info@sinneavefoundation.org or call us at 403 210-5000. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenter: Sherry Taylor has more than 15 years of experience in the not-for-profit industry. She is the EmploymentWorks Program Coordinator at Sinneave and is passionate about developing engaging content and curriculum that educates and makes learning fun for Autistic youth and adults.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Autism: Highlighting the Positives of Being Autistic & Awesome
DESCRIPTION:Here at The Sinneave Family Foundation (Sinneave)\, we want to foster environments where Autistic individuals are free to be themselves and recognize the value they bring to the places they live\, learn and work\, so they can thrive. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we celebrate all the positives of being Autistic & Awesome! \n\n\n\nThursday\, March 13\, 2025 4- 5 p.m. In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW) \n\n\n\nWhen we read or search about autism online\, we notice that a lot of the information uses negative and disability-focused language. Words like “inflexible”\, “rigid”\, “lack ” and “difficulty” are commonly found alongside definitions of autism. \n\n\n\nHowever\, we know that the medical model of disability–which uses those terms–doesn’t tell the whole story. The human experience really is one of diversity and we want to educate and encourage others to embrace our neurological differences\, not as something that needs to be “cured\,” but instead recognizing the benefits and beauty that different perspectives provide. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we will replace outdated definitions and descriptions of autism with positives\, beginning with celebrating the many positive traits and characteristics common among Autistics and empowering those individuals to embrace who they are and what they have to offer. We will also highlight the vibrancy of Autistic culture and learn ways we can support inclusion in our communities. \n\n\n\nWe are committed to changing the perception of and language around autism and celebrating the many amazing strengths and characteristics of Autistics we know and have the privilege of working with. \n\n\n\nAbout the presenter: \n\n\n\nSherry Taylor has more than 15 years of experience in the not-for-profit industry. She is currently the Program Coordinator for EmploymentWorks at Sinneave. She is passionate about developing engaging curriculum and content for Autistic youth and adults through a strengths-based lens\, focusing on the strengths\, characteristics and positive traits that Autistics bring to their communities.
