SUMMARY:Skills Group: Acceptance & Commitment Training (ACT)
DESCRIPTION:Registration for our January-February Skills Groups is now closed.  \nWe offer Skills Groups every quarter. We open applications for each group approximately 4 weeks in advance of the start dates. When the application window opens\, you can find a live link on this page as well as on our Event Calendar\, which you can access by clicking HERE. When you click the live link\, you will be directed to an application form to complete. Once your form is submitted\, a staff member will follow up with you. If there is not a link\, we are not currently accepting applications. \n\nSkills Groups are skill development workshops that are facilitated by two Sinneave staff members (one is an autistic self-advocate). In each 90-minute workshop\, participants learn a variety of strategies that are foundational to success in various aspects of daily life. They are then given opportunities to practice the strategies with the support of the facilitators and other group members. \nThe next Acceptance & Commitment Training group runs for eight consecutive weeks\, beginning Tuesday\, January 16 through March 5\, 2024.  \nDo you ever act on “autopilot\,” lost in your thoughts and not noticing the world around you? \nDo you ever feel like your difficult thoughts and feelings (such as sadness or anxiety) are in control of you\, and getting in your way? \nDo you find that the things that matter to you in your life don’t get done as much as you’d like? \nDo you struggle with motivation? \nThe skills we teach in Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) can help. \nACT is an evidence-based approach that increases: \n\nyour capacity to be present in the moment\,\nyour ability to accept and work with difficult thoughts and feelings\, and\nhelps you prioritize what matters to you.\n\nACT teaches you how to manage unwanted experiences. When our thoughts and emotions are all over the place\, ACT teaches us to anchor so that we can weather the storm. It can help you lead a richer and more fulfilling life. \nACT teaches six core skills to help you: \n\nContact With the Present Moment: this focuses on being present and aware of your current internal and external world; it encourages being flexible in how you pay attention\nAcceptance and Willingness: this is making room for unwanted or unpleasant feelings\, or thoughts without trying to change them\nUnhooking (defusion): this involves stepping back from and observing your thoughts and feelings without being caught up in them; that is\, noticing your thoughts and feelings and deciding if you should pay attention to them\, or just let them be\nThe Observing Self: This involves becoming more aware of and in contact with a part of you that is always there; the observing self is an observer of thoughts\, feelings\, and memories\nValues: knowing your values helps to clarify what matters to you\, like the person you want to be and the things you want to do\nCommitted Action: Life is in the doing; this involves committing to yourself to ACT in the direction of your value-driven goals\n\nACT is an attention-training program where you will learn to strengthen your attention “muscles” and flexibly direct your attention where you want it to go. \nResearch has proven ACT can be effective with a diverse range of people (including autistic people\, teachers\, caregivers and support workers) and with a variety of conditions (including ADHD\, trauma\, substance abuse and psychosis). \nYou will have the opportunity to learn and share in a safe and supportive environment. \nPlease note: Skills Groups are closed groups with a limited number of participants to allow for the greatest participation. They are filled by application only. These are not drop-in sessions. \nTo learn more about Skills Groups\, visit our website\, by clicking HERE

SUMMARY:Celebrating Autism during Neurodiversity Celebration Week
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off Neurodiversity Celebration Week with a celebration of all things Autism and you’re invited!\n\nWhen we read or search about Autism online\, one thing we notice is that a lot of the information uses negative-based and disability-focused language. Words like “inflexible”\, “rigid”\, “lack of” and “difficulty “are commonly found alongside the definitions of Autism.\n\nHowever\, we know that the medical model of disability which uses those terms doesn’t tell the whole story.\n\nAt The Sinneave Family Foundation\, we are focused on changing the perception and language around Autism\, starting with celebrating the many positive traits and characteristics common among Autistics and empowering those individuals to embrace who they are and what they have to offer.\n\nIn this celebration\, we will shift the views on Autism towards the positives\, amplify the strength and vibrancy of the Autistic culture\, and ways we can support Autism inclusion in the workplace and in life. The event will include a short presentation\, information sharing\, and discussion in a safe and welcoming small group environment.\n\nTuesday\, March 19\, 2024\n\n4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\n\nat The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24th Avenue NW Calgary\, AB) OR virtually via Sinneave Connects\, our online learning platform.\n\nIf you already have a Sinneave Connects account\, just log in as usual. If you haven’t yet opened an account\, it’s easy! Click the button below that says\, “Celebrating Autism! – Jan 4” to be directed to the portal and follow the prompts.\n\n Pick a user name\n Pick a password (Don’t forget to record it somewhere safe for next time!)\n Select “Register”\n Choose “Celebrating Autism! – Mar 19” and enroll.\n\nCelebrating Autism! – Mar 19\n\nPlease note: While advance registration is not necessary for most of our Learning & Connection activities (you are welcome to just pop-in)\, IF you do pre-register it helps us in our planning AND allows us to notify you in the event of a last-minute change or cancellation. Either way\, we’d love to see you!\n\nAbout the Presenter: Sherry Taylor has over 15 years of experience in the not-for-profit industry. She currently is the Program Coordinator with the EmploymentWorks program at Sinneave. She started working with the EW Online program and made the transition to the in-person program continuously developing curriculum and content for Autistic youth\, adults\, and persons with disabilities\, and professionals.\n\nIf you have any questions about this session\, please contact us by emailing info@sinneavefoundation.org or calling 403 210-5000.\n\nP.S. Did you know there’s a quick access button to Sinneave Connects in the upper right corner of our Homepage.

SUMMARY:The Art of Parenting...with Autism
DESCRIPTION:Our next Art of Parenting…with Autism group meets Thursday\, March 21 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. online via Sinneave Connects. \nEach Art of Parenting session focuses on different aspects of parenting through the lens of being autistic and/or parenting Autistic children. Through a short presentation\, discussion and activities\, participants will receive encouragement\, support and practical short and long term strategies for navigating parenting in the healthiest way possible\, with a focus on self-care and compassion. \nThis particular session will offer advice and provide strategies on how to help pre-teens and teenagers through the hormonal chaos we’ve all been through at one point in our lives. The teen years can be a confusing time for kids and parents both. An autism diagnosis can sometimes add to the complexities\, making managing the hormonal and emotional chaos even more challenging. We will discuss what coping\, caring and compassion look like in the midst of the chaos. \nThese sessions intend to educate\, empower and encourage parents on their journey\, as well as create a safe community of ongoing support. Participants will benefit from the practical information provided each session as well as the connection of others who share similar experiences. \nDuring this session\, Sinneave staff\, guest presenters\, and attendees may share information about community resources. Information provided may not always be accurate\, up-to-date\, or reliable. Attendees are encouraged to be critical consumers of information available on the internet. Providing information about a community resource is not endorsement and Sinneave does not assume any risk for the outcome of using the information shared during this session. \nThis session is FREE and entirely virtual\, via our Sinneave Connects online learning platform. \nIf you already have a Sinneave Connects account\, just log in as usual. If you haven’t yet opened an account\, it’s easy! Click the button below that says\, “The Art of Parenting – March 21” to be directed to the portal and follow the prompts. \n\nPick a user name\nPick a password\nSelect “Register”\nChoose “The Art of Parenting – March 21” and enroll.\n\nThe Art of Parenting – March 21 \nAbout the Presenter: Joannie Rosevear is a neurodivergent mother of five beautiful children. She is passionate about supporting and encouraging other families so they don’t feel alone in their journey. Her personal experience in parenting children both on and off the spectrum informs the work she does as a Program Facilitator with The Sinneave Family Foundation\, knowing that\, while books\, resources and professionals are helpful\, connecting with someone with lived experience and who “gets it” can be truly empowering. \nIf you have any questions about this event or if you need support navigating  the Sinneave Connects learning hub\, please email info@sinneavefoundation.org or call 403 210-5000. We’re here to help! \nPlease note: While advance registration is not necessary for most of our Learning & Connection activities (you are welcome to just drop-in)\, IF you do pre-register it helps us in our planning AND allows us to notify you in the event of a last-minute change or cancellation.
