SUMMARY:The Art of Parenting...with Autism
DESCRIPTION:The next Art of Parenting…with Autism group meets Thursday\, September 19 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. online via Sinneave Connects. \n\n\n\nEach Art of Parenting session focuses on different aspects of parenting through the lens of being Autistic and/or parenting Autistic children. SUMMARY:"Phrased & Confused" A Fun Workshop All About Idioms
DESCRIPTION:If you wanted to do something outside\, but now it’s “raining cats and dogs” and your friend said they’d go out in the rain “when pigs fly” we would understand if you were confused. \n\n\n\nPhrases of Confusion (also known as idioms) are multi-word expressions that have non-literal meanings\, which can often only be figured out by using contextual information. \n\n\n\nIdioms can be heard everywhere: in the workplace\, at school\, at the local bar\, and even at home. Each language has its own set of unique idioms\, but they don’t often translate well. And\, if you aren’t familiar with them\, they can leave a person feeling very confused. \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, the literal meaning is never the correct meaning of what the speaker is trying to get across. \n\n\n\nGood communication is already difficult enough for some Autistic individuals\, so finding a solution for learning idioms is important. \n\n\n\nIn this fun and interactive session\, participants will learn about and discuss some common idiomatic expressions and be able to understand and identify idioms\, learning tips\, and strategies to predict the meanings of many of them. \n\n\n\nThursday\, September 12\, 2024 \n\n\n\n4:00 – 5:00 p.m. at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24th Avenue NW) \n\n\n\nor Online via Sinneave Connects \n\n\n\nIf you already have a Sinneave Connects account\, just log in as usual. SUMMARY:Phrased & Confused: All About Idioms
DESCRIPTION:If you thought your task would be a “piece of cake\,” but now you’ve “bitten off more than you can chew” and want to “call it a day” we would understand if you were perplexed. \nPhrases of Confusion (also known as idioms) are multi-word expressions that have non-literal meanings\, which can often only be figured out by using contextual information. \nIdioms can be heard everywhere: in the workplace\, at school\, at the local bar\, and even at home. Each language has its own set of unique idioms\, but they don’t often translate well. And\, if you aren’t familiar with them\, they can leave a person feeling very confused. \nUnfortunately\, the literal meaning is never the correct meaning of what the speaker is trying to get across. \nGood communication is already difficult enough for some Autistic individuals\, so finding a solution for learning idioms is important. \nIn this fun and interactive session\, participants will learn about and discuss some common idiomatic expressions and be able to understand and identify idioms\, learning tips\, and strategies to predict the meanings of many of them. \nMonday\, July 29\, 2024 \n4:00 – 5:00 p.m. at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24th Avenue NW) \nor Online via Sinneave Connects \nIf you already have a Sinneave Connects account\, just log in as usual. SUMMARY:Autistic & Awesome: Celebrating the Positives of Autism
DESCRIPTION:Here at Sinneave\, we want to foster environments where Autistic individuals are free to be themselves and recognize the value they bring to the places they live\, learn and work\, so they can thrive. \nJoin us as we celebrate being Autistic & Awesome! \nThursday\, July 25\, 2024 \n4:00 – 5:00 p.m. \nIn-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW)  \nWhen we read or search about autism online\, we notice that a lot of the information uses negative and disability-focused language. Words like “inflexible”\, “rigid”\, “lack of” and “difficulty “are commonly found alongside definitions of autism. However\, we know that the medical model of disability–which uses those terms–doesn’t tell the whole story. The human experience really is one of diversity and we want to educate and encourage others to embrace our neurological differences\, not as something that needs to be “cured\,” but instead recognizing the benefits and beauty that different perspectives provide. \nWe are committed to changing the perception of and language around autism and celebrating the many amazing strengths and characteristics of Autistics we know and have the privilege of working with. \nIn this session\, we will replace outdated definitions and descriptions of autism with positives\, beginning with celebrating the many positive traits and characteristics common among Autistics and empowering those individuals to embrace who they are and what they have to offer. We will also highlight the vibrancy of Autistic culture and learn ways we can support inclusion in our communities. \nThe event will include a short presentation\, information sharing\, and discussion in a safe and welcoming small group environment. \nAdvance registration is not required. We look forward to seeing you there! \nIf you have questions about this session\, please reach out by email to info@sinneavefoundation.org or call us at 403 210-5000.
