SUMMARY:AIDE Canada Webinar - The Female Autism Gap: Why Diagnostic Tools are Failing Women
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, autism research and diagnostic tools focused primarily on male presentations. As research and lived experience continue to shape the field\, our understanding of how Autism presents in girls and women is growing. \n\n\n\nThis important panel brings together three leading voices who are helping advance that understanding and improve how autism is recognized and assessed. \n\n\n\nTogether\, they will explore why many women have historically been overlooked in diagnostic processes\, and how research\, clinical insight\, and lived expertise are helping change that. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDuring this webinar\, we’ll explore: \n\n\n\n• Why current Autism diagnostic tools may not fully capture female presentations• How camouflaging and gendered expectations can influence clinical assessment• What emerging research and practice can do to improve recognition and support \n\n\n\nThis discussion is designed for clinicians\, educators\, researchers\, families\, and Autistic individuals interested in building a fuller understanding of the female autism experience. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, March 3111:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Mountain Time)Online via AIDE Canada \n\n\n\nRegistration for this event is via AIDE Canada’s website. SUMMARY:Work and Care: Identifying and Addressing Burnout
DESCRIPTION:13.4 million Canadians (42% of the population over the age of 15) are unpaid caregivers. Over 5.2 million people in the workforce balance a job with caregiving duties. Women (52%) are more likely to be caregivers than men (42%)\, particularly in roles requiring regular\, time-intensive personal care. Nearly 1 in 5 caregivers are over the age of 65. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we’ll deep dive into the world of burnout\, as it applies to caregivers. Learn to recognize the signs and causes of caregiver burnout—which is described as a state of mental\, physical\, and emotional exhaustion often triggered by juggling multiple responsibilities. \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore common stressors such as job demands\, caregiver fatigue\, and interpersonal conflicts\, and discuss practical strategies to prevent or manage burnout in the workplace. \n\n\n\nThis session is presented by Autism Edmonton in partnership with Caregivers Alberta and support from The Sinneave Family Foundation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, April 912:00 – 1:00 p.m. (Mountain Time)Online via Autism Edmonton \n\n\n\nRegistration for this event is via Autism Edmonton’s Eventbrite page. You can register by clicking the button that says “Register.” \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \n\n\n\nChristina Henderson is a highly motivated and professional trainer in workshop facilitation\, administration\, and program development. SUMMARY:Women's Group: Peer Support for 18+
DESCRIPTION:Women often face unique experiences as Autistic and neurodivergent individuals\, including how we socialize\, societal expectations\, and how Autism is understood and expressed. \n\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to offer a group designed specifically for Autistic and neurodivergent adults (18+) who identify as women or who connect with experiences of womanhood.* This is not a therapy group\, but rather\, a supportive\, non-clinical space to discuss and share ideas\, lived experiences\, and connect meaningfully with others. \n\n\n\nThe content and resources shared in this group are informed by both lived Autistic experience and research as they intersect with gendered experiences in society. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we’ll talk about different aspects of being Autistic and what that means and looks like in daily life. Participants are welcome to share lived experiences and discuss strategies that have been helpful for them. \n\n\n\nTopics may include: \n\n\n\n\nStrategies for regulation\n\n\n\nCommunication strategies\n\n\n\nLifestyle changes\n\n\n\nSensory-friendly accommodations\n\n\n\nLeaning into interests\n\n\n\nFinding neurodivergent community and support\n\n\n\n\n*This group is intended for Autistic and neurodivergent folks who identify as women or who connect with experiences of womanhood\, inclusive of non-binary and other 2SLGBTQ+ identities and expressions. We open our doors to members of our community every Tuesday\, Wednesday and Thursday from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to drop in and use our space to help you unwind or recharge—with no pressure to engage in structured activities. It’s your time to use your way. \n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 21 we’re honouring Earth Day in a calm\, welcoming\, and flexible way! Join us between 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. and participate as much or as little as you want: \n\n\n\n\nContribute in your own way to a collaborative mural representing elements of the earth that support regulation\, comfort and sensory well-being.\n\n\n\nContribute at your own pace by helping assemble the tree puzzle\, then add a leaf expressing something in nature you are grateful for.\n\n\n\nEngage in earth-themed “Would You Rather” questions\, try earth bingo\, or explore facts and myths about the earth.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe space remains open for people who don’t want to participate in structured activities. We provide flexible seating options\, focus tools\, and adjustable lighting options in an effort to make our space more welcoming and inclusive to those who wish to spend time in it. \n\n\n\nSuggested activities: \n\n\n\n\nSocializing: Chat with others\, make new connections\, or catch up with friends\n\n\n\nUsing Computers: Access the internet\, complete personal tasks\, or explore hobbies online. SUMMARY:Social Communication Workshop: Understanding Communication Beyond Words
DESCRIPTION:Much of our everyday communication involves the use of non-spoken cues and unwritten social rules. Non-spoken cues can include things like facial expressions\, posture\, eye contact\, hand gestures\, and tone of voice. \n\n\n\nThese are often used to emphasize a particular point that the communicator is trying to make. They may also be used to change the meaning of the words being spoken. For example\, using sarcasm. \n\n\n\nNot everyone uses or understand these cues or rules\, yet it is often assumed that everyone knows what they are and what they mean. Thankfully\, they can be explored\, practiced\, and adapted in ways that support everyone’s understanding.  \n\n\n\nIn this session\, you will have the opportunity to: \n\n\n\n\nDevelop greater understanding of non-spoken cues and how they impact shared communication.\n\n\n\nDiscuss strategies for noticing\, interpreting\, and responding to non-spoken cues.\n\n\n\nReceive tips to support effective non-spoken communication across different social situations.\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 216:00 – 7:30 p.m.In-person @ The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW)There is no cost to attend \n\n\n\nOur Social Communication workshops are designed to provide Autistic and neurodivergent individuals opportunities to learn and practice a variety of social communication skills in a safe and welcoming setting. Through years of experience guiding families\, Dr. McLeod understands how overwhelming and confusing the DTC process can be. Many eligible individuals are denied simply due to incomplete applications or unclear medical documentation. His approach centers on education\, clarity\, and ensuring applications are properly positioned to meet CRA requirements. \n\n\n\nAs the author of How to Successfully Apply for the Disability Tax Credit\, Dr. McLeod provides practical\, step-by-step guidance to help individuals\, caregivers\, and professionals confidently navigate the process and access the financial support they deserve. \n\n\n\nHis mission is simple: remove barriers\, increase awareness\, and help families turn DTC approval into long-term financial opportunity. \n\n\n\nTrish Van Sickle is a passionate RDSP educator on a mission to ensure no eligible Canadian misses out on one of the most powerful financial programs in the country: the Registered Disability Savings Plan. \n\n\n\nDespite offering up to $90\,000 in government grants and bonds\, hundreds of thousands of eligible Canadians still do not have an RDSP simply because they don’t understand how it works or where to start. That’s where Trish steps in. \n\n\n\nShe simplifies the complex\, breaks down the rules\, and focuses on education first. Whether families work with her directly or choose another institution\, she equips them with the knowledge\, confidence\, and the right questions to ask so they can properly set up\, manage\, and maximize their RDSP. \n\n\n\nHer mission is bold and clear: raise awareness\, close the education gap\, and connect as many Canadians as possible to the financial security they deserve. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, or need technical support accessing Sinneave Connects\, reach out to us at info@sinneavefoundation.org or call 403 210-5000.
