SUMMARY:Self-advocacy Workshop Part Three: Finding Your Voice
DESCRIPTION:Building on what we learned in Self-advocacy Parts One and Two\, this session will provide practical tips and strategies for you to practice effectively communicating your needs with others. When you have an understanding of what’s important to you\, you can clearly communicate\, set boundaries\, and make decisions that align with your beliefs and goals. \n\n\n\nThis session is one of three drop-in workshops designed to provide Autistic and neurodivergent individuals opportunities to learn about self-advocacy and practice skills essential to learning to speak up for yourself confidently. Each 90-minute workshop will cover different aspects of self-advocating and provide information\, tips\, and strategies intended to help in day-to-day social situations. \n\n\n\nAs these sessions build on each other\, attending all three is recommended\, but not required. \n\n\n\nThere is no cost to attend these sessions and you don’t need to register in advance. \n\n\n\nIf attending in-person isn’t possible for you\, you can also choose to attend virtually via Sinneave Connects\, our online learning portal. Sinneave Connects is FREE\, but you must register for an account to use it. \n\n\n\nIf you already have a Connects account\, just log in as usual. If you have not registered yet\, it’s easy! Click the button below that says “Sinneave Connects” to access the portal and follow these steps: \n\n\n\n\nCreate a user name\n\n\n\nCreate a password (don’t forget to save it someplace handy)\n\n\n\nSelect “Register”\n\n\n\nChoose the Self-advocacy Workshop Part Three: Finding Your Voice – February 20\, 2025 course to access the virtual link.\n\n\n\n\nSinneave Connects\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are three workshops in this series: \n\n\n\nSelf-advocacy Part One – Knowing YourselfYou’ve probably heard the word “Self-advocacy” before\, but do you know what it is and how to do it? \n\n\n\nSelf-advocacy is expressing your needs and preferences in a way that ensures your voice is heard in the decisions that impact your life. An important first step to self-advocacy is understanding the barriers you face and the strengths you bring to each situation.  \n\n\n\nIn this session\, you will learn what self-advocacy is and how can it benefit you. This session will also help you understand your strengths and some of the barriers you face. This knowledge will enhance your ability to self-advocate. \n\n\n\nAs these sessions build on each other\, attending all three is recommended\, but not required. \n\n\n\nSelf-advocacy Part Two – Starting the ConversationBuilding on what we learned in Self-advocacy Part One\, this session will provide tips and strategies for you to practice communicating your needs with others\, as well as how you can effectively start conversations about your needs.  \n\n\n\nSelf-advocacy Part Three – Finding Your VoiceConcluding what we learned in sessions one and two\, this session will provide practical tips and strategies to help negotiate and discuss how you can have your needs met in your current environment. We will also have an opportunity to summarize and apply everything we have learned up to this point. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about these workshops\, or if you need help navigating the Sinneave Connects online learning portal\, please reach out by email at info@sinneavefoundation.org OR call us at 403 210-5000. We’re here for you! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPS Did you know? SUMMARY:Celebrating Autism: Highlighting the Positives of Being Autistic & Awesome
DESCRIPTION:Here at The Sinneave Family Foundation (Sinneave)\, we want to foster environments where Autistic individuals are free to be themselves and recognize the value they bring to the places they live\, learn and work\, so they can thrive. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we celebrate all the positives of being Autistic & Awesome! \n\n\n\nThursday\, March 13\, 2025 4- 5 p.m. In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW) \n\n\n\nWhen we read or search about autism online\, we notice that a lot of the information uses negative and disability-focused language. Words like “inflexible”\, “rigid”\, “lack ” and “difficulty” are commonly found alongside definitions of autism. \n\n\n\nHowever\, we know that the medical model of disability–which uses those terms–doesn’t tell the whole story. The human experience really is one of diversity and we want to educate and encourage others to embrace our neurological differences\, not as something that needs to be “cured\,” but instead recognizing the benefits and beauty that different perspectives provide. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we will replace outdated definitions and descriptions of autism with positives\, beginning with celebrating the many positive traits and characteristics common among Autistics and empowering those individuals to embrace who they are and what they have to offer. We will also highlight the vibrancy of Autistic culture and learn ways we can support inclusion in our communities. \n\n\n\nWe are committed to changing the perception of and language around autism and celebrating the many amazing strengths and characteristics of Autistics we know and have the privilege of working with. \n\n\n\nAbout the presenter: \n\n\n\nSherry Taylor has more than 15 years of experience in the not-for-profit industry. She is currently the Program Coordinator for EmploymentWorks at Sinneave. She is passionate about developing engaging curriculum and content for Autistic youth and adults through a strengths-based lens\, focusing on the strengths\, characteristics and positive traits that Autistics bring to their communities.
