In the beginning, we had joint goals like “Liam will take the garbage out unsupervised and come back inside without being told to do so. Mom will stay inside the house with the door shut and not take a Xanax. With 100% accuracy.” Think that’s funny? It’s not. Every day, kids with autism wander. During these exercises, I stood behind my front door with my heart pounding and could let him go for only about 10 seconds before dead panic set in. He had to learn how to go and come back.
