“Before I started the CommunityWorks program, I was really anxious, I was uncertain, and just didn’t really have much confidence in my abilities. I was really unsure about my options for the future, and because of my lack of self-confidence, I didn’t really know where to go. I heard about the CommunityWorks program and was really hesitant at first – doubting my ability to commit and perform. I was worried I wasn’t ready for the demands and active community engagement part. But upon joining the CommunityWorks program, I was very nervous but excited to see what lay ahead. So, upon joining, I was just – anxious – but that quickly got dispelled. I began transitioning from that anxious, hesitant individual waiting for direction, to a more confident individual willing to ask questions and take the actions needed.”

“Through the various volunteer activities, and with my increasing confidence, I was able to connect and engage with my fellow volunteers to become an active member of my community and share the experience with others. This allowed me to reflect on passions, realize my potential and help myself and others reach their goals. I originally believed that I had few options in life and that even these were unreachable, but CommunityWorks showed me that that was not true. Through CommunityWorks, I discovered many new opportunities, and with my new found confidence, able to direct my own path.”

“In CommunityWorks, I learned new skills and the value of interacting and helping others. As my confidence grew, I found I was capable of so many things, and could accomplish what was once overwhelming.  I have accomplished some goals and set new ones.  I am a counsellor at Between Friends Camp Bonaventure, and realize my role in life may be helping others.”

“Thanks to CommunityWorks and all their staff for helping me take that first big step.  Always remember when you are worried about the future and don’t know where to start, look around you and take that first step so you can start to take off running.”

CommunityWorks Canada® (CWC) is a peer supported pre-employment training program for teens and young adults with ASD ages 15-21 who are currently attending high school. The program is delivered during after school hours and provides participants with the opportunity to develop and practice basic job skills, improve social and communication skills, acquire community volunteer experience and cultivate potential areas of interest for future employment.

As staff at The Ability Hub prepare for the upcoming September session, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge the many people who have contributed to the success of the program to date, and extend a heartfelt thank you to our community partners who have generously provided their time, space and work experiences – we could not have done it without you.

The September program is currently full and we are now accepting applications for January 2017. For more information about the program and how to register, please call Al Bhanji at 403-210-5000 or e-mail info@theabilityhub.org. You can also visit the Worktopia website at www.worktopia.ca.

CommunityWorks Canada® is sponsored by The Sinneave Family Foundation and Autism Speaks Canada, and is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities Program.
