Jade joined the Launch + Skills program after moving from Lethbridge to Calgary in 2020. Initially Jade was looking to develop pre-employment skills, while also getting connected to his new community.
“I joined the Launch + Skills program to learn how to write a resume and a cover letter so I could show employers my skills.”
Jade refined his pre-employment skills with a coach by working through resume building, cover letter development and interview practice. Jade also worked on defining his interests to help identify possible careers and jobs. Jade recently started working at a local café as a Barista.
“I heard about the job opportunity through my Skills Coach. My Skills Coach also worked with me to apply for the position and prepare for the interview. I am learning a lot at my new job. I am enjoying working there. My favorite thing about the job is making coffee for the customers.”
Jade is also preparing to move in the month of May. Jade heard about a new housing opportunity through the Aspires Housing Group and is excited to continue his journey of living independently.
“I feel pretty good about moving. I am looking forward to the group activities that will be held at my new place. I am also happy that there is a lot of stores around in the new area.”
A big contributor to Jade’s success in the program was that he maintained a high level of motivation and engagement with his Skills Coach. He has made some significant steps towards his goals in life and we are excited to be able to continue working with Jade as he prepares to explore educational opportunities.
Jade had this advice for anyone who is thinking of joining the Launch + Skills program:
“Don’t be nervous, it is good to learn how to write a resume and cover letter. It is also important to remember that you might not get the exact job you want the first time, but the right thing will come around eventually.”
