Launch + Skills Spotlight on Richard – September 2020
Richard initially joined the Launch + Skills program looking to develop pre-employment skills and to explore post-secondary options. He wanted some support to help him define what kind of career would be a good fit, and to help plan the steps towards achieving his goals. Richard has now graduated from the Launch + Skills program, but maintains contact with his Skills Coach for intermittent check-ins.
“The program was something different that seemed like it would be useful. I felt like it could help me in the real world”
Richard refined his pre-employment skills with a Skills Coach by working through activities such as resume building, cover letter development and interview practice. He also worked on defining his interests to help identify possible careers. While attending the program, Richard also had the opportunity to discover other programs and community supports to expand his circle of support.
“It definitely helped me get out a bit more. Having a larger support group was a big plus. It opened up other opportunities and doors for me”
A big contributor to Richard’s success in the program was that he maintained a high level of motivation and engagement with program staff. He also regularly attended the weekly Cafés to help grow his social group. Thanks to Richard’s drive to succeed, he has made some significant steps towards his goals in life.
Richard independently acquired a seasonal job this summer and will be taking his initial steps into post-secondary this fall, starting with attending a few courses at Mount Royal University. We are all very excited for Richard and cannot wait to see where his journey takes him.
Richard had this advice for people who might be considering the Launch + Skills program:
“I suggest going into the program and also exploring the other programs that The Sinneave Family Foundation offer.”
