Launch + Skills Spotlight on Garret Matthews – October 2019

“Launch + Skills has given me the confidence to socialize better with people, it helped in preparation for job interviews and to advocate for myself.  I feel that I have gained more independence to go anywhere.”

Garret Matthews is a 2nd year student at Mount Royal University studying Computer Science. Garret initially joined the Launch + Skills program at the end of May, 2018 with goals ranging from finding employment to improving his GPA for the fall semester of 2018.  He was also looking for support in breaking those big goals down into manageable steps including learning how to create and adhere to a schedule for personal tasks, studying, and chores. Garret was keen to make social connections with people of like minded interests through clubs or the Launch + Skills Cafés.

Over the past year in Launch + Skills Garret has increased his GPA, created and adhered to a schedule which has improved his relationships at home. Garret has taken up working out at the MRU gym once a week to become physically healthier. Garret has expressed that he has “found his tribe” by joining and participating in a weekly Dungeons & Dragons group at MRU, and this has contributed to feeling more motivated to do well in school and other areas of his life. He’s even starting to run a group bi weekly and is interested in hosting a D&D game night for a Launch + Skills Café soon.

On the employment goal, Garret was successful in acquiring a part-time job at ATB Financial and his contract was just renewed for a full year! Garret recently re-enrolled for a “re-charge” with Launch + Skills to access additional coaching sessions as he wants to continue to develop and maintain balance in his schedule with school, work and social life.

The Launch + Skills team is so pleased to see how much Garret has matured over the past 18 months, and particularly how he is seeing his future looking brighter as he progresses.

A few other Launch + Skills reported successes that we want to give a shout-out to include:

Ethan has improved his time management and professionalism skills as he works on finding employment.

  • Remy attended his first Café.
  • Eric has found a job and is now booking his own appointments.
  • Jack and Teresa have both found part-time employment.
  • Rutger has become employed full-time.

We thank all who have shared their stories, and commend each Launch + Skills participant as they continue to make progress towards their individual goals.
