Sinneave Visits Ridgestone Lodge in Black Diamond, Alberta

The transition for individuals moving out of their parental home is a common priority and concern for the individuals and families we support. Since 2012, Sinneave has worked with a variety of stakeholders to advance supported independent living opportunities for autistic adults.   Recognizing that there are diverse needs that call for a range of housing and service options for autistic individuals throughout adulthood, Sinneave is committed to working with others to find innovative solutions.

John Seigner and Carolyn Dudley from the Supported Independent Living team at The Sinneave Family Foundation were pleased to join Ryan Geake, Executive Director at The Calgary SCOPE Society, for a tour of SCOPE’s new supported living facility in Black Diamond.  Nestled in a small Alberta community, Ridgestone Lodge is home to up to 17 individuals who are over the age of 55 with developmental disabilities and accompanying mental health and aging concerns. Ridgestone Lodge is an excellent example of a well thought-out community living model for groups of individuals with higher support needs.

The tour and subsequent discussions provided insight into SCOPE’s experience in meeting the building code requirements for this type of dwelling as well as providing the necessary supports for Ridgestone residents.  An example of a building code requirement they encountered was the need for a commercial kitchen in a building with 4 or more residents.

The Ridgestone Lodge has incorporated welcoming common space that supports social connection among residents, an important aspect of quality of life.

Thank you to Ryan Geake and SCOPE for opening your doors and providing a tour.  The Ridgestone Lodge is a great example of a thoughtfully planned, community-based supported living home for the over 55 age group who are in need of visionary solutions.  For those interested in learning more about this housing and support opportunity, contact The Calgary SCOPE Society.
