SUMMARY:The Employment Classroom: Knowing yourself and your employment goals
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about all the stages of the employment journey and the steps you can take to lead you on a path to success? We offer a series of workshops that cover many topics related to finding a job\, keeping a job\, and thriving in the workplace.  \n\n\n\nIn this Employment Classroom session\, participants will spend time learning about themselves\, their personality\, skills\, interests\, and understanding their values and motivations. Having a good understanding of who you are and what you want is important for setting realistic and fulfilling employment goals\, which can lead to a more satisfying career journey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, April 810:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Avenue NW) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop combines classroom instruction and time to practice what you’ve learned with support from the facilitators\, if needed. Attendees to these workshops must be able to participate independently. \n\n\n\nPlease note: These classes are limited to 12 attendees. Registration is on a first-come\, first-served basis. Having navigated masking\, burnout\, loss\, and the ongoing work of reclaiming agency\, they approach their work with humility\, intention\, and care. Ryan creates spaces where people can show up fully\, where reflection and authenticity meet courage and growth. Grounded in a neuro-affirming\, trauma-informed\, person-centered\, and strengths-based approach\, they walk alongside others in the lifelong practice of becoming. \n\n\n\nMarcela Montes-Lobos is an EmploymentWorks online facilitator at the Sinneave Family Foundation and is a late-diagnosed Hispanic neurodivergent adult who has embraced her unique diversity as well as her family’s. Having lived experience in language barriers\, as well as other barriers that many neurodivergent folks face in life\, she decided mid-life to return to school\, leaving a career in the airline indjustry and becoming an Addiction and Disability Support Worker. Many different factors can make conversations run smoothly (or lead to misunderstandings). \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, participants will learn why miscommunication happens and feel more confident navigating it.  \n\n\n\nTogether\, we’ll discuss: \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is really happening when we communicate\n\n\n\nCommon reasons for miscommunication\n\n\n\nRecognize how autism\, non-spoken “language”\, and unwritten social rules affect our communication\n\n\n\nHow to anticipate and prevent misunderstandings\n\n\n\nHow to address and repair miscommunication when it happens\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 76:00 – 7:30 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW)There is no cost to attend this drop-in workshop. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed to provide Autistic and neurodivergent individuals with opportunities to learn and practice a variety of social communication skills in a safe and welcoming setting. DESCRIPTION:Many individuals benefit from what is referred to as a “third space”—a place separate from home\, work\, or school where there is no obligation to spend money on food or beverages. To that end\, our doors are open every Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday evening for members of our community to use our space. \n\n\n\nDrop-in to work or play\, rest and recharge\, with no pressure to engage in structured activities. We have several rooms and spaces available–a quiet lounge\, computer desks\, hang out sofas–you choose. It’s your time to use your way. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, March 17\, we’re hosting a special activity during Your Time\, Your Way. Participants can drop-in between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. for a crafting meet-up. \n\n\n\nThis promises to be the perfect blend of creativity and community. Spend the evening crafting\, chatting\, and sharing ideas in a laid-back environment. No experience needed\, just a willingness to create and connect. All skill levels are welcome. \n\n\n\nParticipants can bring their own craft and supplies\, however\, materials will be provided for people who want to try something new\, like origami\, painting\, key chain and bracelet making and adult colouring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you don’t want to participate in the craft meet-up\, you are still welcome to use the space; here’s a not-exhaustive list of things you can do: \n\n\n\n\nSocializing: Chat with others\, make new connections\, or catch up with friends\n\n\n\nUsing Computers: Access  the internet\, complete personal tasks\, or explore hobbies online. We offer a series of workshops that cover many topics related to finding a job\, keeping a job\, and thriving in the workplace.  \n\n\n\nIn our next Employment Classroom\, participants will learn all about paycheques\, how to plan a budget\, and how to avoid scams. \n\n\n\nAttendees will learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe skills to manage your personal income\, expenses and budget\n\n\n\nThe basic tools that people need in their financial toolkit\n\n\n\nThe difference between needs and wants when it comes to your personal finances\n\n\n\nTo identify gross income from sources and deductions\n\n\n\nTo adjust a personal budget to allow you to achieve a simple goal\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, March 1110:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Avenue NW) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop combines classroom instruction and time to practice what you’ve learned with support from the facilitators\, if needed. We have several rooms and spaces available–a quiet lounge\, computer desks\, hang out sofas–you choose. It’s your time to use your way. \n\n\n\nOur space provides flexible seating options\, focus tools\, and adjustable lighting options as we strive to make our space more welcoming and inclusive to those who wish to spend time in it. \n\n\n\nOur drop-in hours are 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions of things you may like to do\, but this is not an exhaustive list: \n\n\n\n\nSocializing: Chat with others\, make new connections\, or catch up with friends\n\n\n\nUsing Computers: Access  the internet\, complete personal tasks\, or explore hobbies online. DESCRIPTION:Starting a conversation with someone new or joining in a conversation that is already underway can be difficult. In this workshop\, we will learn and practice a few strategies to help you enter into conversations more confidently. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you will gain the skills and knowledge to: \n\n\n\n\nFeel more comfortable and confident in your communication skills\n\n\n\nExplain what is required for good conversation\n\n\n\nIdentify ways to find a good conversation partner and show you’re interested in talking\n\n\n\nPractice strategies for starting and continuing conversations\n\n\n\nPrepare a list of future conversation topics\n\n\n\nPractice troubleshooting communication experiences\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, March 36:00 – 7:30 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Ave NW)There is no cost to attend this drop-in workshop                                                                    \n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed to provide Autistic and neurodivergent individuals opportunities to learn and practice essential social communication skills in a safe and welcoming setting. Learn about neuroaffirming research in a way that makes sense with researchers from U of C’s Wonderlab.  \n\n\n\nThey’ll bust common myths\, chat about what research does (and doesn’t) tell us\, and share ways you can shape future research projects. SUMMARY:Visioning Workshop: Creating a Blueprint for Your Life
DESCRIPTION:In this fun and interactive session\, we’ll discuss the importance of visualization and how it helps to create a positive self-image. Participants will learn about the power of thought and imagination and how increased confidence can help you take reasonable action steps towards making the vision and goals for your life a reality.  \n\n\n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to create their own vision boards to take home. There is no cost to attend this session and all supplies will be provided. \n\n\n\nWednesday\, February 256:15 pm – 7:45 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Avenue NW)  \n\n\n\nVision boards are tactile and visual tools to help you visualize and set goals around your education\, career\, family\, relationships\, and more. The images you choose can help you better envision what you’d like your life to look like. \n\n\n\nCreating a vision board can help you figure out what’s important to you\, which can help to inform your future steps. Displaying your vision board in a place where you regularly see it can be a great reminder of those things in your daily life. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter: \n\n\n\nCedric Nicholson is a certified professional life coach with over 20+ years of experience mentoring\, coaching\, and supporting individuals in the developmental disability field. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about all the stages of the employment journey and the steps you can take to lead you on a path to success? We are offering a series of workshops that cover many topics related to finding a job\, keeping a job\, and thriving in the workplace.  \n\n\n\nIn our next workshop\, participants will learn about the pros and cons of disclosing\, as well as how to ask for accommodations. \n\n\n\nSpecifically\, you will: \n\n\n\n\nLearn about disability disclosure on the job\n\n\n\nGain tips on how to request a reasonable accommodation\n\n\n\nExplore other information related to how to effectively self-advocate in the workplace \n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, February 2510:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.In-person at The Ability Hub (300\, 3820 24 Avenue NW) \n\n\n\nThe workshop combines classroom instruction and time to practice what you’ve learned with support from the facilitators\, if needed.
