The federal government initiated the process of developing a National Autism Strategy in 2019. However, since then, the Canadian government has shifted their focus towards the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to note Autistic people in Canada have been and continue to be largely excluded from policies that emerged from the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On November 30th, the Senate of Canada held the second reading of Bill S 203, “An Act respecting a federal framework on autism spectrum disorder. The proposed legislation calls on the federal government to act on “Pay Now or Pay Later,” the Senate report published in 2007, by implementing a federal framework on autism, including measures such as financial supports and accountability in the use of federal funds, research and improved data collection, awareness campaigns and online resources.

  1. Bill S-203 allows for the opportunity to reintroduce a National Autism Strategy into the House of Commons. Read more about the stages in the legislative process here.
  2. Bill S-203 provides a necessary timeline for the federal government to act on their commitment towards a National Autism Strategy. For more information on the development of this strategy, visit CASDA’s website to view the Roadmap to a National Autism Strategy webinar and document HERE.

The Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorder Alliance (CASDA) strongly believes Bill S-203 will make an impact and provide the next steps for the government to act on a National Autism Strategy.

Sinneave is a member organization of CASDA and appreciates the work going into advancing a National Autism Strategy. If you want to stay informed about Bill S-203 and a National Autism Strategy consider becoming a CASDA member.
